Laatikoita, kalkkunaa ja muita jouluherkkuja on nautittu kolme päivää ja näin Tapaninpäivänä kaipaa jo jotain muuta. Gluteeniton kalkkuna-chorizo-ananaspizza maistui mainiolta reippaan ulkoiluhetken jälkeen. Tuuli paukuttaa taloa, mutta sisällä on lämmintä ja tunnelmallista. Hyvää joulun ajan jatkoa kaikille...

IN ENGLISH:
We have been stuffing ourselves with traditional Finnish Christmas food tweaked with some turkey but enough is enough. Today after a lovely outing in the windy December air gluten free turkey-chorizo and pineapple pizza was most delicious. It is still very windy outdoors but inside it is warm and comfy. Hope you are enjoying the Christmas season too.
 

NOVEMBER AND OTHER LIFE'S DELIGHTS

You may think November is miserable and wet but when you are an indoor cat it is one of the best months of the year. This is my new sleeping bag. I sleep my nights here.

And this is my day bed. It is next to a fireplace so if my butt is cold I put it close to the warm fireplace and it warms me up pretty quickly. Here's a picture of me taking a nap. A nap that lasts hours....

BLACK AND COLOURFUL NEWS / MUSTIA JA KIRJAVIA UUTISIA

Hello! It's us again The Black one and and his mate the Colourful one. We're back! Our life has been in turmoil. We have been upset, annoyed and extremely bothered. These people we are living with have been doing crazy things behind our backs.
You don't belive us, two cats? Well, here's the proof.

FIRST they started fussing about the home being neat and tidy the whole time. We found that a bit odd.

THEN they put us into our cage and took us to places that looked like parking lots and there we sat in pouring rain having nothing to do and having no reason to be there. And once we got back home, the home smelled funny.

THEN things started disappearing. A cat is not that bothered if a cup or a shoe goes missing but when the armchairs you are used to scratching suddenly disappear and some other less important things too, you start to wonder what is going on...

AND FINALLY when they close the door behind you and leave you into AN EMPTY ROOM for the whole day, you certainly start to get worried.

And now we know what they have been up to. We have moved to an other home. They call it temporary. We don't know what that means since all we have is right now but the Mistress of this very tiny home keeps talking about another bigger home we'll be getting soon. She has even said something about an outdoor area for the two of us.

But as you can see, we are not that interested. This place is warm, we get food, they have more time for us and we have a brand new very nice toilet. What else do we need?
Talk to you later. We need our power naps...

SUOMEKSI:

Moi! Me taas tässä; Musta ja Kirjava. Meidän elämä on ollut kamalaa, järisyttävää ja pelottavaa. Epäilimme jo, että nämä ihmiset, jotka olemme ottaneet asumaan seuraksemme ovat seonneet, mutta asiat ovat jo vähän selkiytyneet. Ai ettekö usko kahden kissan havaintoja. Isäntä ja Emäntä alkoivat siivoamaan vimmatusti. Koska meillä siivotaan vimmatusti? Epäilyksemme heräsivät.

Sitten meidät tungettiin matkahäkkiin, mutta meitä ei viety hoitolaan tuttuun paikkaan vaan ajelimme autolla hetken aikaa ja istuimme sitten jollain parkkipaikalla vesisateessa tosi pitkään. Kun tulimme kotiin, oli ilmassa outo tuoksu.

Tilanne rauhottui hetkeksi, mutta sitten tavaroita alkoi katoamaan. Kissa ei kaipaa kadonnutta lusikkaa tai kenkää, mutta kun nojatuolit, joita olet tottunut raapimaan pitkin yötä katoavat, niin kyllä sitä vähän ihmettelee.

Ja viimein kun sinut suljetaan tyhjään huoneeseen koko päiväksi, niin alkaa jo pelottaa ja kauhistuttaa.

Mutta nyt me tiedämme mistä oli kysymys. Me olemme uudessa kodissa saman Isännän ja Emännän kanssa. He kutsuvat tätä väliaikaiseksi, mutta me emme tiedä mitä se tarkoittaa. Meillä on vain tämä hetki. Emäntä juttelee, että saamme myöhemmin ulkoilualueen ja isomman kodin, mutta täällä on ihan hyvä olla. Meillä on ruokaa, täällä on lämmintä ja Isäntä ja Emäntä huomioivat meitä enemmän. Niin ja meillä on ihan uusi hieno vessa. Siinä on kaikki, mitä kaksi kollia kaipaa... Öitä.

SUMMER READS

The summer has been pretty cool and we haven't really had hot lazy days at all. Maybe that's why my summer reads -list is fairly short.

I finally started the Isabel Dalhousie books by Alexander McCall Smith. I have read all his Ladies' Number 1 Detective Agency -books as well as all the Scotland series books and found the first Isabel book; The Sunday Philosophy Club very similar to Scotland series and enjoyed the first book a lot although it wasn't the easiest summer read to a non-native speaker.

I wasn't too impressed by Anita Shreve's latest book Rescue and found it a bit dull and the plot wasn't quite credible. It was just alright - I have read better ones.

I finished my summer holidays in London's East End reading about life in the 50s in all its glory. I loved Jennifer Worth's Call the Midwife and am determined to read her other three books about life in the 50s. 50s wasn't really that long ago and many of the people in the book are still alive. I love London and reading about its past always fascinates me.

I also read an interesting book about a cat and the man the cat adopted. Some people find books about pets / animals naff but this book really touched me and even changed me. The book is about a man struggling with his life in London and how he meets a cat that gives him the push he needs to change his life.  

I have visited London often and have seen people busking at Covent Garden and selling Big Issue magazines around the city. I have never bought a Big Issue magazine - I am ashamed to say -  or even thought about who these people are and why they are in the street selling a magazine but reading the story of James Bowen opened my eyes to the hardship so many people face even in my beloved London. This book educated me and changed my view of the world to some extend. And I loved the cat; A Street Cat Named Bob.

Joku ehkä miettii, mitä Kirjavalle ja Mustalle kuuluu. Pojat ovat seestyneet arvokkaiksi kissaherroiksi, jotka eivät enää tuhoa kotiaan, mutta rakastavat edelleenkin Aviomiestä palavasti. Musta varsinkin on löytänyt herkän puolensa ja haluaa halauksia monta kertaa päivässä. Pari vuotta olimme talon tylsimmät tyypit, joita ei kannattanut halailla tai huomioida, mutta jokin on muuttunut ja sen tietää ainakin aikaisin aamulla alkavista halaushetkistä... Voi Musta anna meidän nukkua!

The Hubbilicious has been watching sports and I have been entertaining myself by catching up with my favourite magazines. Apparently people who put pictures of meals they have eaten into their blogs are sad bloggers and I am going to join the club here and today.


The first gluten free tip is Jamie's Italian restaurants for example in London. The food was lovely and they even had gluten free pasta available.

Yleisurheilun seuraaminen on pitänyt Aviomiehen kiireisenä viime päivinä ja olenkin viihdyttänyt itseäni ja lueskellut lempilehtiäni. Ihmiset, jotka laittavat syömistään ruoka-annoksista kuvia blogiin ovat yhden lehden ruokakriitikon mukaan surkeita bloggaajia ja päätin liittyä taas tänään tähän surkiaan joukkoon.


Ensimmäinen vinkkini on Jamie's Italian -ravintolat esimerkiksi Lontoossa. Ravintolassa saa myös gluteenitonta pastaa ja se oli herkkua. Listalla oli myös muita gluteenittomia vaihtoehtoja ja henkilökunta tiesi mitä gluteeniton tarkoittaa.

Parilla -ravintolassa Raumalla sain kaksi kertaa väärän ruoka-annoksen, mutta toinen annos oli gluteeniton ja ihan maistuva.

Sometimes taking an order from a customer is hard work and in Parilla -restaurant in Rauma they got my order wrong twice. The second dish was very nice but it wasn't what I ordered.

The highlight of the summer so far is the restaurant in Hotel Standbo in Nauvo in the Turku archipelago. The fish and the new potatoes were really tasty and I would definitely go to this restaurant again.

Nauvossa hotelli Starndbon ravintolassa kala ja uudet perunat maistuivat ja olivat tähän mennessä kesän parasta herkkua.

Naatalissa Luostarin puutarhassa herkuttelimme Aviomiehen kanssa gluteenittomilla pitsapuolikkailla ja pitsa yllätti meidät täysin. Hyvää ja maistuvaa.

Gluten free pizza surprise was in Naantali in a restaurant called Luostarin puutarha. It was tasty and surprising and definitely deserves a second visit in the future.

PÄIVÄ KISSAN ELÄMÄSSÄ / A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CAT

Nyt on syytä valittaa!


Tuo Isäntä katseli eilen kiekon perässä luistelua ja minä loikoilin iltanokosilla saunassa. Yhtäkkiä Isäntä porhalsi saunaan, laittoi kiukaan lämpiämään ja sulki oven perässään ja jätti minut yksin sinne saunaan.


Siellä istuin ja ihmettelin ja sauna lämpeni lämpenemistään. Oli kuulkaas kuumat oltavat kissalle.


Viimein Isäntä tuli katsomaan, onko sauna jo kyllin lämmin, ja minä istuin lauteilla ihan rauhallisena ja odotin, että ovi aukeaisi.


Ovi aukeni ja esitin huoletonta kattia ja mietin oikein pitkään, lähtisinkö saunasta ollenkaan vaikka päässä huippasi ja janotti.


Emäntä hössötti ja yritti juottaa vettä, mutta ei kiinnostanut.


Parin tunnin kuluttua tuli vähän muikea olo ja vetäsin oksennukset pariinkiin paikkaan. Siinähän vietti Isäntä perjantai-illan niitä pessen. Hah!


Ja kun Emäntä tuli saunasta meni takaisin saunomaan. Ei tämä katti niin vähästä säikähdä!




IN ENGLISH:


I have a complaint.


I was minding my own business and taking my seventh nap of the day in the sauna when the Hubbilicious rushed into the sauna, switched it on, closed the door and rushed back to the sofa because he is so keen on watching grown men chase a tiny black puck on ice.


There I was all alone in the sauna and it kept getting warmer and warmer. Luckily I have nerves of steel and there I sat not complaining, not uttering even the tiniest miaow. 


After an hour or so the Hubbylicious returned to check if the sauna was hot enough and I can tell you it WAS! I decided to play cool and took my time to decide whether I wanted to leave the hot sauna or not. I did but ever so slowly.


The Mistress of the House kept fussing and tried to force me to drink something but I still kept my cool.


A couple of hours later I vomited once or maybe twice around the house just to annoy the Hubbylicious and went back to the sauna after the Mistress had had enough of the heat.


That teaches them not to close doors in front of me!

TOMAATTIKEITTO / TOMATO SOUP

TOMAATTIKEITTO


1. Pilko noin 1kg tomaatteja, laita ne uunivuokaan, lisää 3-4 valkosipulinkynttä ja vähän suolaa ja melko paljon oliiviöljyä. Paista uunin yläosassa n.15 min 225 asteessa.


2. Kaada paahdetut tomaatit ja valkosipulit blenderin kannuun, lisää nippu tuoretta basilikaa ja sulatejuustoa maun mukaan.


3. Sekoita ainekset hyvin blenderissä. 


4. Lämmitä keittoa hetki kattilassa ja tarjoa tuoreen leivän kera.


TOMATO SOUP


1. Half about 1kg tomatoes and put them into an ovenproof dish. Add 3-4 garlic cloves, some salt and quite a lot of olive oil. Roast for 15 minutes in 225 centigrade.


2. Put the roasted tomatoes and garlic gloves into a blender. Add fresh basil and some cheese spread. 


3. Mix well.


4. Heat the soup in a saucepan for a while and serve with fresh bread.


PS This is really yummy...

The first of May is a day of complete idleness and how fun it is when it is in the middle of the week. So we have been enjoying a lazy brunch with lots of gluten free goodies and many mugs of tea. It's still quite cool outside and we are not too keen on the traditional Finnish ways of celebrating the first of May but it is nice and cosy here at home together with the Hubbilicious. But will need to go for a walk after this feast...

It looks like the spring has found us at last and there are lots of little birdies flying around and I am stuck inside dreaming of just one bite.. The sun is warming my fur in a most delightful way and I am just enjoying this life of mine.

KUPPIKAKKUJA / CUPCAKES

Tämä Emäntä ei ole kovin nopea innostumaan uusista virtauksista ja kuppikakkuhuuman jälkeen on jo varmaan tullut vaikka mitä uutta ja muodikasta, mutta täällä leivottiin tänään ensimmäiset kuppikakut. Ostin viikkoja sitten Provenan gluten free muffin mix -pussin ja tänään leivoin ihania suklaamuffinsseja. Koristelin ne The Hummingbird Bakery -keittokirjasta löytämälläni kuorrutteella:


KUPPIKAKKUKUORRUTE


250 g  tomusokeria
80 g voita tai margariinia
25 ml maitoa 
muutama tippa vanilijaesanssia


Tein kyllä vain neljäsosan kuorrutteesta ja se riitti kolmeen kuppikakkuun. Provenan muffinssisekoitus on gluteeniton ja se sisältää puhdasta kaurajauhoa. Pussista tuli 11 muffinsia. Tätä ostan toistekin!

I am not very good at following the latest trends and the cupcake fever has probably passed ages ago but the Mistress of this House made her first cupcakes today. I bought Provena's gluten free muffin mix which includes gluten free oat flour and made the most delicious chocolate muffins. I frosted them with vanilla frosting from The Hummingbird Bakery cookbook:


VANILLA FROSTING


250g icing sugar
80g butter
25ml milk
a couple of drops of vanilla extract


I only made one fourth of the frosting and it was enough to only three cupcakes! I got 11 cupcakes out of the bag and will definitely make them again!






PS. Kävin viikonloppuna lounaalla Tampereen Finlaysonilla sijaitsevassa italialaisessa ravintolassa. Gluteeniton risotto ei ollutkaan gluteeniton ja vatsa on ollut kipeä siitä lähtien. En taida kokeilla toista kertaa...

PÄÄSIÄINEN 2012 / EASTER 2012

It had snowed LOTS last night and the morning looked like winter wonderland. The Hubbylicious has been humming Christmas carols all morning long and we had to shovel some snow. So, a pretty normal Finnish Easter. 


IN FINNISH:


Yöllä oli tullut KAMALASTI lunta ja ikkunasta avautui talven ihmemaa. Jouduimme lumitöihin ja Aviomies hyräili pitkin aamua joululauluja. Tyyppillinen suomalainen pääsiäinen siis.

I got some saltless roasted chicken and it was YUMMY!

Have been planning to bake hot cross buns for the first time ever and on Wednesday I did it. Only one of the buns looks a bit like in the cookbook. That about how it usually goes with my gluten free baking so no surprises there! We Finns don't seem to have mixed spice in our shops so used just cinnamon, cardamom and some orange zest and used the same old bun recipe that always works for gluten free buns. The cross was easy to make with gluten free flour and water. While baking I also made some cinnamon rolls and at least they turned out alright.

Tämä emäntä on haaveillut hot cross -pullien leipomisesta jo viikkoja ja keskiviikkona viimein tartuttiin taikinaan. Vain yksi pullista näyttää suunnilleen samalta kuin ohjeessa, mutta näinhän se menee gluteenittomien leivonnaisten kanssa, ainakin tässä taloudessa. Englantilaisten käyttämää mausteseosta ei osunut marketin hyllyiltä silmiin, joten käytin vain vanhaa tuttua (ainoaa toimivaa) pullareseptiä ja lisäsin kardemummaa, kanelia ja appelsiinin kuorta. Ristin tein gluteenittomista jauhoista ja vedestä. Innostuksissani tein vielä kanelipullia. Ne onneksi onnistuvat aina ja ne maistuivat herkuilta aamulla brunssilla.

TUKHOLMA GLUTEENITTOMASTI / STOCKHOLM GLUTEN FREE

Talvinen Tukholma vei sydämen ja osoittautui vaivattomaksi lomakohteeksi keliaakikolle. Pikaruokaa saa gluteenittomasti ainakin McDonaldsilta, Burger Kingiltä ja Pizza Hutista. Oli hauskaa piipahtaa tälläiseen helppoon ruokapaikkaan, kun yleensä niitä maailmalla matkatessa täytyy karttaa.


Kungsträdgårdenin laidalla Restaurang Cafe Milano tarjosi monipuolisen lounaan ja kokki oli valmis tekemään useampaakin ruokaa gluteenittomana eli sain valita. Haavelin myös ruotsalaisista lihapullista ja niitä löytyi gluteenittomana esimerkiksi Skansenin Terrassen-ravintolasta. Siellä maistuivat myös mainiot lätyt kermavaahdon ja hillon kera.


Gluteenitonta löytyi myös vanhankaupungin kahviloista ja Sturekatten kahvilasta. Tässä löytämiäni vinkkejä Tukholmaan:

Gluteenittomuus ei ole vieras asia Tukholman ravintoloissa ja suosittelenkin, että kysyt gluteenitonta, minne sitten menetkin Tukholmassa.


IN ENGLISH:

Stockholm in January was a delight and a very easy holiday destination to a celiac. Fast food is widely available gluten free at least in McDonalds, Burger King and Pizza Hut. It was fun to eat in a fast food restaurant while on holiday since fast food restaurants are the ones you usually have to avoid on holidays.

Along Kungsträdgården in the centre of Stockhom there is a restaurant called Café Milano and they had gluten free pasta and were happy to make other dishes gluten free too. I also dreamed of gluten free Swedish meatballs and found them in Skansen in restaurant Terrassen. They also had lovely pancakes with whipped cream and jam.

I was also able to find gluten free pastries in the cafes in Old Town as well as in Cafe Sturekatten in Norrmalm. Here are some gluten free tips to Stockholm:

DREAMING OF A SNOWLESS CHRISTMAS

Pihalla sataa ihanasti vettä ja lumi sulaa. Kahden lumisen talven jälkeen tämä Emäntä ei kaipaa tippaakaan lunta, vaan viettää mukavan ja vähälumisen joulun täällä rannikolla. Taateliomenakakku on leivottu (reseptin olen jo laittanutkin blogiin aikaisemmin) ja jouluvalmistelut tehty. I am happy to say that it is raining and the snow is melting away. After two harsh and snowy winters this Mistress does not miss snow at all and is planning to spend a lovely and snowless Christmas here on the coast.


I have baked my Christmas cake already and made all the preparations. We even managed to have a pre-Christmas party with friends. Happy Christmas to you all.
